THE HEART STOPPER CHALLENGE - TAURANGA 2010 : Every week in New Zealand, 12 babies are born with a heart defect. There are 10,000 New Zealand children living with a heart condition. There is not a day goes by that a child does not undergo open heart surgery at Auckland’s Paediatric Heart Unit, or new parents face the prospect of caring for a chronically ill child. For many of these children having heart defects means extended and regular periods in hospital for corrective surgeries and procedures, ongoing medication, tests and the possibility of further surgery, further complications.

Arthritis New Zealand
The 2009 Annual Appeal focused on the difficulties that many people with arthritis are faced with every day. To show some of the struggles they encounter, we are launching a new campaign that will include celebrities wearing Orange Gloves, with the catchphrase ‘Could you handle it?’ This will help to illustrate just how difficult it can be to use everyday objects when you have arthritis in your hands.
Arthritis New Zealand is one of New Zealand’s leading not-for-profit organisations, representing 522,000 people living with this painful and often debilitating disease. Our mission is to enable a better quality of life for people with arthritis. This can only be done with the help of a generous community and their contribution.
The income raised goes to helping our 32 Arthritis Educators provide advice, self-management courses, seminars and assessment, as well as referrals to other services, where appropriate. The organisation also funds research projects through the National Arthritis Research Fund. For more information call 0800 663 463 or visit www.arthritis.org.nz

World Day of Organ Donation and Transplantation
Organ donation can only occur in less than 1% of all deaths. For someone to be able to donate organs they must have sustained a non-survivable brain injury and be in ICU on a ventilator. Organ donation can happen to anyone, anytime and it is important you discuss your wishes with your family – if your family know your wishes, it eases an already extremely traumatic time. For more information visit www.donor.co.nz
